When the tiny glands under the skin’s surface become blocked, people may develop acne and pimples on the forehead. Hormonal changes, stress, medication and other factors can cause it. Pimples do not pose any serious health risks, but people may think they are unattractive and can cause discomfort. In this article, we discuss what causes acne and pimples on the forehead and how to treat and prevent them.

Causes of forehead acne

Acne is a chronic skin disease that can lead to the following lesions:

  • Whitehead
  • Blackhead seeds
  • Boils

  • Cysts
  • Nodules

Acne can appear anywhere on a person’s body, but it is most common on the face, shoulders, back, chest, and arms. A person may notice acne when the tiny glands just below the surface of the skin become blocked.

These glands, which are known as sebaceous glands, produce an oily substance called sebum. They can be blocked by excess sebum, dead skin cells or bacteria. When this happens, the glands may become inflamed and a pimple may form.

Certain factors can increase the amount of sebum produced by sebaceous glands. This sebum increases the possibility of pimples. The factors are:

  • Hormonal changes are especially common during puberty, as hormone levels fluctuate significantly during this period.
  • Stress: There is a link between stress and acne outbreaks, but the reasons are unclear.
  • Medication: Some types of medication can cause acne as a side effect. For example, we can mention some steroids, anticonvulsants, barbiturates or lithium.
  • Hygiene: Failure to wash hair and face regularly can lead to fat deposits on the forehead and blockage, which causes pimples.
  • Hair products: Some hair products, such as gels, oils, or waxes, have been linked to acne breakouts, known as pomade acne.
  • Skin irritation: Applying makeup on the forehead or wearing clothing such as hats can irritate the forehead and also lead to breakouts. Frequent touching of the forehead can also aggravate the skin and cause acne.

home remedies for forehead acne

Home remedies for acne

Treatment will vary depending on the severity of the acne outbreak. Most people can treat their acne with over-the-counter (OTC) medications. A wide variety of gels, soaps, lotions, and creams are available to treat acne. These products usually contain one or more of the following active ingredients:

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Salicylic acid
  • Retinol
  • Resorcinol

People can buy many of these acne treatments.

The effectiveness of these treatments can vary between people, so trial and error may be necessary to determine the best method. People with sensitive skin may benefit from using creams or lotions.

It may take several weeks for a person’s symptoms to completely go away, so you often need to be patient with these treatments. Also, for some people, mild side effects such as skin irritation are common in the early stages of treatment.

For people with more severe acne, medication may be needed. A dermatologist will be able to assess a person’s symptoms and determine the best treatment. These can include oral medications and gels or creams that can be applied directly to the forehead.

Prescription medications for acne may include:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Antimicrobials
  • Antibiotics

  • Retinoids
  • Combined contraceptives

People with acne should avoid popping their pimples as this increases the risk of scarring and infection.

Home remedies can also be used along with medication or for very mild cases of acne on the forehead.

An example of a home remedy is applying a warm compress to the forehead twice a day, which can help remove excess sebum and improve recovery.
